What is SSL? Why you need one in 2019 and beyond!

The question of whether or not your website has an SSL certificate comes on too often nowadays. Many believe that SSL certification is just another gimmick while others standby it.  In this article, we are going to clear the smoke on SSL certificates and their validity in today’s websites.

What is an SSL certificate?

SSL or Secure Socket Layer Certificate is a security system that sends information between the browser and the server in an encrypted manner. SSL ensures that all the data that is sent over through the line is secure and encrypted.

The process of encryption plays a major role here as it turns the information from your website into a random code that can only be decrypted by the recipient. Why this is important?

The information from your website travels from computer to computer before it reaches the target destination. If there is no encryption, those computers will be able to see the content that you are sending through them. Encryption doesn’t allow others to eavesdrop on your information.

Such is a system is of critical importance nowadays as information such as credit card numbers and personal information are used on websites, especially if you are running an e-commerce site.

When you install an SSL certificate, it changes the website protocol from HTTP to HTTPs, where the s stands for Secure.

SSL and server authentication

Another advantage of an SSL certificate is that it allows authentication between the browser and the server. In other words, the SSL certificate ensures that the information sent through your website reaches not just any server, but the right server.

Hackers often make counterfeit servers that can trick your website into thinking they are the real deal. The result is that the information from your website will be sent to the wrong server, in this case, right to the hacker.

SSL certificate authenticates the whole process so there is no breach in the system. There are mainly three types of SSL certificates

Domain Validation certificates: Requires the user to prove his ownership over the domain to get the certificate. This type of SSL certificate is useful for websites that host blogs or informative content. Domain Validation Certificate is the most basic of SSL certificates and is the easiest to attain.

Organization validation Certification: More secure than Domain validation certification and provides encryption for payment information during transactions. The owner of the website must go through an investigation conducted by the Certification Authority to provide their ownership over the domain name to attain the certification. It is pricier than Doman Validation certification.

Extended Validation Certification: The highest ranking of any SSL certifications. To get EV certification, the website owner must complete an identity verification process and must validate their authority over the domain. Having an EV SSL shows the website information along with the owner’s name in the address bar.

Choosing between them should be based on the type of website you have and your requirements.

Does having an SSL certification impact SEO of the website

Many fail to realize the impact of SSL certificate on SEO. Installing an SSL certificate does improve the SEO stats of your website, and this isn’t just speculation. Google themselves made this clear by stating “Beyond our own stuff, we’re also working to make the Internet safer more broadly. A big part of that is making sure that websites people access from Google are secure. For instance, we have created resources to help webmasters prevent and fix security breaches on their sites.

We want to go even further. At Google I/O a few months ago, we called for “HTTPS everywhere” on the web.”

Google even flags websites that do not have an SSL certificate as not secure in the address bar. From 2019 and forward, make sure you add an SSL certificate to your new website. Existing websites can also install SSL certificates with ease. Make sure you approach a trusted SSL certificate provider.

Bottom line

So if you were on verge of deciding whether an SSL certificate would be a good addition to your website, now you know why it’s time that you get one!
